Chapter One - Mishna 1 (5)

Make a fence for the Torah
The third thing the Men of the Great Assembly said was, "Make a fence around the Torah". In the picture we see an actual fence surrounding the Ten Commandments and the Torah. What is this fence? Who put it there? What does it mean? If you had a garden and wanted to make sure no one trampled on your flowers, you would put up a fence. The fence would keep bicycles and children from getting too close. The Sages wanted to protect the things inside the Torah. They made "fences". These laws keep us from making a mistake and going against the laws of the Torah.
