The Bavarfen

Overheard in Passing

A young chosson was in shul for his 'aufruf', eagerly awaiting the deluge of 'pekalech', which would come soaring through the air momentarily.

A guest suddenly walked over to him and asked, "Do you know why 'pekalech' are thrown at the chosson at his 'aufruf'? The chosson answered, "No; can you please tell me?"

"Listen carefully, young man," the guest explained; "You are just on the threshold of real life. During the course of this life, you will have many 'pekalech' thrown at you. Deal with them as wisely as the innocent children here in shul do. In every 'pekaleh' there are sweets to be relished. Look for those sweets, find them, and internalize them. These 'aufruf pekalech' should be your symbol for real living."
